During the exam, Dr. Alevi will place dilating drops to help expand the pupil.
Once the pupil has fully dilated, light is used to look at the entire retina and make sure to rule out diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration.
This allows Dr. Alevi to closely examine the interior of each eye, including the retina, macula, and the optic nerve which are located at the back of your eyes.
Dr. Alevi does a thorough comprehensive dilated eye exam. This helps Dr. Alevi look for a multitude of conditions such as
-Glaucoma
-Age-related macular degeneration
-Cataracts
-Diabetic retinopathy
-Retinal detachments
-Retinal scars
-Bleeding
No, the drops do not hurt or cause pain. The drops take about 25 minutes to enlarge the pupil and help in making sure your eyes are healthy. We suggest brining sunglasses because you may be sensitive to bright light and a bit blurry after dilation.
This should go away in a couple of hours. Your pupil will return back to normal.
This all depends on your age and any conditions found in the eye. Dr. Alevi will
schedule exams based on those factors. Dr. Alevi at South Bronx eyes takes the time to make sure everything will be explained.

Every eye has meibomian glands which are glands that produce a lipid oil that helps moisten the eye. The glands are critical for helping the eye be hydrated and making sure the tears don’t evaporate once on the eye. At certain times due to a multitude of causes these glands can be blocked. This can often lead to redness and inflammation in the eyelid as well as itchiness.
Certain patients are predisposed to having the condition. Other causes have been issues with hormones, Sjogren Syndrome, psoriasis, and Rosacea.
At South Bronx Eyes, Dr. Alevi, a board certified Ophthalmologist, has extensive experience with meibomian gland dysfunction. Having trained under one of the leaders in the field, Dr. Alevi has a structured treatment plan to help with this condition. On initial exam, Dr. Alevi will look to see the extent of the dysfunction and run some tests to see what can be done to help.
Many times the simplest thing is using warm compresses 5-10 minutes per day to help with the dysfunction. Other treatments that have been found to be helpful include Omega 3 fish oil and Doxycycline. This should be discussed with your Ophthalmologist who can give the best treatment based on your condition.
